How the conversion works
US GPA doesn't convert from percentages with a formula — it converts throughletter bands. Your percentage determines a letter, and the letter carries a fixed point value: 93% and 99% are both an A and both worth 4.0, while 92% drops to A− and 3.7. Worked example with the default: 88% falls in the B+ band (87–89%), so it converts to3.3. Notice what banding does at the edges: an 89.4% is still a 3.3 while an exactly-90% is a 3.7 — four tenths of a GPA point hanging on half a percentage point. The banding problem, honestly stated
Because banding is lossy, converting a course average to GPA is legitimate, but converting an overall percentage average to a single GPA is an approximation. A student averaging 88% could hold four B+ courses (GPA 3.3) or two As and two B−s (GPA 3.35) — same average, different GPA, because GPA rounds each course before averaging. The middle column reverses CBSE's ×9.5 rule; the right column runs the same mark through US bands. Read across a row and you'll see the systems don't agree on severity — a 75% is a respectable 7.9 CGPA in India and a middling 2.0 in US terms. How do I convert a percentage to GPA on the 4.0 scale?
Find the letter band your percentage falls in, then take that letter's grade points: 93%+ is an A (4.0), 90–92% is A− (3.7), 87–89% is B+ (3.3), 83–86% is B (3.0), and so on down to F (0.0) below 60%. An 88% is therefore a 3.3 GPA on the most common US scale.
What GPA is 85 percent?
On the standard US scale, 85% falls in the B band (83–86%), which is 3.0 grade points. On a 7-point scale where B runs 85–92, an 85 is the bottom of the B range — same letter, different cutoffs, which is why the syllabus scale matters more than any converter.
How do I convert percentage to a 10-point CGPA?
